When you first open Procreate Dreams, the interface opens to the "Theatre" where you can create, access, and share your animations.
Gestures/Controls
- Create a movie/animation:
- Click on the + icon in the top right
- Swipe between 5 common size/resolutions
- To create the file either:
- Tap "Draw" to start with an empty drawing in Draw and Paint mode
- Or tap "Empty" to open the Timeline, without any content
- Rename: Long hold on a movie → choose "Rename"
- Select: to delete or group into a folder → tap on the command, tap on the needed animations, and then tap on either "Delete" or "Folder" (please keep all of your animations in a folder with your name)
- Share: Long hold on a movie → choose "Share"
- Duplicate (like Save As): Long hold on a movie → choose "Duplicate"
The "Stage" represents the area within the camera — what will appear in the final render or export. The "Backstage" is the area outside of the camera — which will not appear in the final output. Having drawings (or etc.) extend into the backstage can allow for panning/zooming of the environment, or for assets to come in and out of view over the course of the animation.

The Timeline takes up the bottom half of the workspace and holds multiple tracks (layers) of content. Images, video, audio, and text can all be added to tracks in the Timeline and timed/organized there to form your animation.
Within a single track there could be multiple drawings held for various amounts of time, a single asset held for the entire track, or different assets one after the next. Tracks also can hbe organized in groups and sub-groups for easier organization.
Timeline UI
The top of the Timeline gives access to the menu and Timeline controls.
- Theatre button: returns to the Theatre view to access or make other animations
- Animation name (Dream # by default): provides access to the movie properties/settings
- Play/pause button: play and pause the visible range of your animation
- Performing: the record button lets you keyframe changes in scale/rotation/position/warp in real time as the animation plays
- Timeline edit: for selecting/editing tracks/frames
- Draw & Paint: switches the stage to a drawable canvas
- +: add tracks and content

The Flipbook is intended for frame by frame animation techniques and allows sequences of multiple drawings to be created. Drawing mode must be turned on to access the Flipbook. It is very similar to Procreate's "Animation Assit" mode.
Timing is not currently controlled in the Flipbook, so make any drawings in sequence and then return to the timeline for timing adjustments such as how long each frame lasts for.
Gestures
- Enter/Exit:
- Enter the Flipbook: In drawing mode, drag the Timeline's drag handle downward
- Return to the Timeline: Press the X in the right corner of the flipbook controls (or quickly flick the flipbook handle downwards)
- Reposition the flipbook controls: drag the drag handle on the top edge to position
- Create a new frame: Long hold on an existing frame and then click on the + icon in the top right corner (once in this "add mode", clicking on an empty frame to the right will create the new frame)
- Context Menu:
- Open the context menu for the active (middle) frame: long hold on the center of the frame
- Cut, copy or duplicate the frame by tapping on the relevant command
- Clear frame: returns the frame to a blank/empty drawing
- Tap on the movie name to access "Properties"
- Properties:
- Tap on the related number to change the FPS (frames per second/frame rate), animation duration, width, or height
- Tap on "Unknown Author" to write your own name or pseudonym
- Timeline:
- Set whether the entire animation plays once, loops, or ping-pongs
- Share:
- If needed, tap on "Custom Settings" to specify video or image format/encoding (tap on a setting to see and choose different format options)
- Tap on a format to export in (video, image sequence, a single frame, or Dreams file)
- Either Airdrop, save video/image or save to Files
Animations can be timed at both the movie and frame level.
FPS: Overall Frame Rate
The overall FPS (number of frames per second), can be adjusted in the movie properties. These are accessed by clicking on the movie name at the top left of the Timeline and then clicking on the "Properties" tab. 24 or 12 fps is standard for animation, though choose what works best for your particular movie.
Timing individual frames
- In the Timeline, Zoom in to see your frame clearly
- Long hold on the right edge of the frame and drag to expand or contract
- To drag in context, press with a second finger on the screen before dragging
- or long hold on tthe frame and choose "Fill duration" from the context menu (this makes the frame last for the full length of the animation, as set in Properties)
Timing multiple frames
- Click on Timeline Edit mode (similar to a layer icon)
- Drag the Apple Pencil across the frames to be selected in the Timeline
- Zoom in to see the frames clearly
- Hold one finger on the right side of a frame
- Leave a second finger pressing on the screen
- Drag the first finger to adjust the length of time all frames in the selection will last
Tweening
Basic tweening (automated changes in size, rotation, position, overall color and more) can be done directly in the Timeline and Stage.
Keyframes are saved data states for the start, midpoint, or end (in in size, rotation, position or etc.) of an automated transition.
- Select a frame or track in the Timeline
- For a single frame, adjust the duration to last for at least the length of your planned transition:
- Long hold on the right edge of the frame and drag to expand
- or long hold on tthe frame and choose "Fill duration" from the context menu (this makes the frame last for the full length of the animation, as set in Properties)
- If there are multiple frames in the track, group them:
- In "Timeline Edit" mode (similar to a layer icon), drag across the frames to select them
- Long hold on any of the frames, tracks or groups to access the context menu
- Choose "Group"
- Exit any Timeline modes so that none of the Timeline controls are highlighted
- Tap on the playhead marker (clapboard icon)
- Choose the type of keyframe:
- Move:
- Move & Scale:
- To move: drag from anywhere outside of the drawing boundaries
- To rotate: tap on a corner and then drag tthe rotate handle that appears (rotation will happen around the anchor point)
- To scale: click and drag from one of the corners
- To adjust the anchor for scaling or rotating:
- Tap the context menu icon (...)at the top right corner of the selection
- Choose "Edit Anchor"
- Drag to set the anchor to a new position
- Choose "Done"
- Snapping: hold one finger in place while the other finger moves/rotates:
- Position will snap to center or edges
- Rotation will snap in 30deg increments
- Flip horizontal/vertical from the context menu (...)
- Warp:
- Choose the number of controls horizontally and vertically
- Drag on the nodes (or gridlines) to warp
- Distort: drag on boundary corners/edges to distort
- Filter: live filters can be added for opacity, blur, color and more — tap on the filter to see access the slider/controls (these are non-destructive and so can be changed or removed anytime)
- Move, adjust or remove keyframes as needed:
- Zoom in to see the keyframe icons clearly (key icon looks like a cropping icon)
- Long hold on a keyframe icon to access the context menu & expand or delete
- When the keyframes are expanded:
- Tapping on a key let's you see the data for the key
- Long hold on a key let's you set the interpolation (transition type) for the key
- Long hold between keys let's you set the interpolation for all the states between those keys
- Long hold on a key to access the context menu & "Collapse" keyframes
Live Performing
In "Live Performance" mode (record button), you can create keyframes live while the animation is playing. This currently works for moving, warping, distorting, and filter keyframes.
- Make sure the track or frame duration lasts for the correct amount of time
- If the track is made of multiple frames or groups, select and group them
- Turn off any Timeline modes
- Set the initial position/rotation/scale using the transform controls
- Move the playhead marker to frame 1
- Click on the record button
- Long hold on the playhead marker to choose a type of keyframe
- As soon as you start moving, warping, or adjusting a filter, playback begins and keyframes are recorded in real time
- Press the stop button to end "Live Performing"
